John Emsley in Elemental Building Blocks states that "aluminum production consumes 5% of the electricity in the USA."
He goes on to note, however, that aluminum is easy to recycle as recycling it only requires 5% of the energy needed to extract aluminum from ore. He also notes that at the rate the world is going we'll run out of new supply around 2050.
