The more headline-grabbing news about phthalates in the past few years have been as possible endocrine disruptors. I actually wrote a paper for a grad school course in environmental biology back in 2001 on the topic...research on the topic existed back then, particularly on feminization of fish after exposure to them. But nobody I talked to, let alone any popular press at the time, had even heard of phthalates. Now they've been banned from PVC used in kids toys.
